Thought I heard munching coming from the litter box again this morning, so the final decision was made to switch to a safer litter for her to ingest if that is indeed the case. We've decided to switch to World's Best Cat Litter unscented clumping litter for multiple cats.
I know the switch has to be a gradual one so there's no rejection of the new litter or undue stress on the kids. The WBCL site even has directions on how to switch over! Genius! Easy peasy. Start with 1/3 WBCL and 2/3 of the old, then gradually add more WBCL to 2/3:1/3 ratio, then gradually to all WBCL. So simple I should've been able to deduce it on my own. Derp.
So, today after we got done with helping the shelter kittehs we went shopping for what we needed--old brand litter, new brand litter, and a bin for the new litter. I had a coupon for the new litter courtesy of their facebook feed--"Like" us and get a $2.00 off coupon! Score! We ended up buying it at Pets Supplies Plus, which we ended up finding out charged a buck more than PetCo and PetSmart--oh wells. 38 bucks for a 34 pound bag before tax! Holy Hannah! That's a far sight more expensive than the 11 bucks before tax for a 28 pound box of the brand we're currently using...Still, I understand this stuff is really the bomb as far as clumping litters go, so here's to hoping we're getting what we're paying for! To be honest, we're getting exactly what we're paying for with what we've been using--it clumps hard initially, but with two CRF kittehs pissing in it constantly it doesn't take long for the litter to go "limp" and get pasty where they pee most often if we don't change it out constantly, which (bad kitteh parents, I know...) we don't change out as often as we should...
Anyway...
Then it was off to find a bin to store the new litter in. That was a bit trickier. We needed something easy-to-move because the two boxes are in different places (one in the guest bathroom, the other in the hallway between the bedrooms) so we wouldn't have to either carry the bin to the boxes or constantly carry the litter boxes to where the bin was to fill them. We were hoping to find something suitable at Meijer because they've got good prices, but came up empty. We ended up picking up a dog food bin with wheels on the bottom at PetSmart and it was on sale to boot! It works a smasher, too--easy to roll and the wheels don't mar the white tile floor.
Didn't take long to clean out and replace the existing litter in the three boxes with the new mix. The new litter isn't completely unscented--it's got an odd corny odor to it (go figure--it's made of corn!) that J says is almost exactly the same as that of the old corn bin on his parents' farm. :/ It's not overpowering, just, well...there...Right now it's barely noticable with the ratio of old to new litter we've got, but I wonder what it'll be like when it's all the new litter...We've been using Tidy Cat litter box deodorizer powder in the boxes with the old litter; I'm thinking we'll continue to use it sparingly, so maybe that'll alleviate some of the corny smell. Regardless, like I said, it's not overpowering, so we should be alright...
I'm somewhat stressed about this new development--mainly worried they'll reject the new litter and we'll have accidents and such. We can make the transition gradually enough they probably won't even notice the change much, though, so that provides some comfort. Rejection would most likely to come from Diva, who's very particular about her litter. Even though she's going to be coming out of the guest room within the next day or so, we scrubbed and changed out the litter in that box as well so all the litter in the house is of the same mixture--no surprises for her when she comes out of there, which is a Good Thing.
Fingers crossed the transition from old to new goes well! I don't need more stress, dammit!
