Talked to Dr. B this afternoon about more of what Ra's treatment regimen is going to be like. He'll be on the med for the pre-cancerous cells (he told me the name of it again, I should've asked him to spell it, but will see it when I get a copy of the treatment summary report) once a day for six weeks, then every 72 hours after that six week period of time depending on "clinical response" to the drug. Of course I asked how the clinical response to the drug would be determined--like would another endoscopy/biopsy be necessary after several weeks of treatment with the new drug--and Dr. B wasn't rightly sure of the answer to that save to say he didn't think we should have to put Ra through that/have to pay the big bucks to have it done again so soon. So now I'm left to wondering...Sigh...His Prednisone dose will also be increased during the course of the treatment, but Dr. B didn't mention how much and I brain farted and didn't ask. No matter, I'll find out when I bring Ra in...
In addition to a full blood panel every six months for awhile, Ra will have to have a shorter CBC blood panel drawn once a month in order to monitor his basic blood serum levels during the treatment cycle. I think this is also in order to monitor the kidneys a bit closer as well; Jazz and Diva both had regular CBCs done during the course of their renal failure treatment, so I'm not terribly surprised by this development.
His vitamin B-12 deficiency will be treated with once weekly injections which, it sounds like, I'll have to drag Ra out to the clinic for. Yay, as Ra hates the car ride and tends to get sick during same most rides. :/ When Jazz was looking at getting weekly B-12 shots, Dr. B was willing to give us pre-loaded syringes to bring home, but that didn't come up so I don't know if that'll be an option for Ra since I'm sure Dr. B will want to see Ra on a fairly regular basis while being on the New Med/mini chemo.
New food: Science Diet Z/D, which I'm guessing is their version of hypoallergenic food. I think Royal Canin makes their own version of hypoallergenic food, too--I might just check into that for Ra. Not that most vets don't order Rx Science Diet over any other brand, I just have heard that Royal Canin is a better quality food over Science Diet. In fact, save for Ra's Rx Science Diet K/D, none of my kids are on Science Diet anymore--I transitioned them over to Blue Buffalo Freedom indoor chicken flavored kibbles about a month or so ago and they LOVE IT.
Anyway, that's the latest on Ra. Will know more after his 1030 appointment on Friday at the clinic when I can finally get my mits on the treatment summary...
