...wherein your favorite Curmudgeon goes to the local bookstore and comes out, as per usual, disappointed.
There used to be two book stores in this town--Borders right across the street from us and Barnes & Noble down by the tollway in the Fancy Strip Mall. Borders bit it the first round of store closings, but B & N is still there, for what little it's worth. Except for bi-yearly desk calendars, I have little to no luck in that store and the staff is basically worthless. Nice enough, but worthless...
So today I trek out there seeking a copy of this week's copy of The Nation. Not a totally mainstream magazine, but it is advertised on cable news networks and their pundits frequently appear on TV. I've seen it in every other B & N I've ever been to. So I reckon they're gonna have it or be sold out, as it's a commemorative 10th anniversary of 9/11 edition. Yeah, I can read it online, but there's some stuff that's subscription/paper issue only that I want to read and I can't afford a subscription right now.
I get there and can't find it. I ask. The sales drone putting out new mags gives me a blank look as if she'd never heard of it. She checks the computer--nope, we don't carry it. The hell you say? Seriously? No, really, seriously?
Seriously. There's a B & N near J's office; I'll give them a call to see if they have it and if so if they'll put it on hold for him to pick up after work. If not...well, I've got a source back in Kenosha who's willing to pick it up from the Racine B & N for me and mail it to me.
It sucks to have a sucky book store in town, dammit! :/
