Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] ass_ and [livejournal.com profile] atheism

I will leave my feelings on this post mostly to myself. Keep in mind I'm a Pagan leaning agnostic raised in the Lutheran church, which was (and continues to be when I have contact with it) a pleasant religious experience. I am spiritual and do not care for organized religions, as I view them as businesses more than as places to gather and worship. This is a hot topic and I wish to encourage discussion and debate, but I don't want this to turn into a big ol' drama llama of a thing either. So I encourage you to comment away. Just try to keep it to a dull roar, mkay?

Feel Free to wish me a Merry Christmas. . . .
Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land,
Not a Christian was praying
Nor taking a stand.

See the PC Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - No one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.

It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
December 25th is just a " Holiday ."
Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!

CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.

As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was nowhere to be found.
At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears
You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.

Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.
Now Daschle, Now Durbin, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Reed, on Kerry, on Clinton !

At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace.

The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.
So as you celebrate "Winter Break" under your "Dream Tree"
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Choose your words carefully, choose what you say

Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS , not Happy Holiday!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'Twas the month before Christmas
When all through our land
Not a Christian would shut up
'Bout their stupid demands
"Oh, help us!" they shouted in panicky voices
"These days when we shop there are holiday choices!
The children can't sing in their schools about Jesus,
except when they do, but it still doesn't please us
To hear about Kwanzaa and Hanukkah too.
They should know God does not hear the prayer of a Jew!"
Yet the schools and the stores would not listen, it seemed.
And the poor Christian zealots were getting quite steamed.
Some people remained puzzled by this position
They were mad stores stopped cheapening their religion?
"Don't they know mass appeal drives up sales left and right?
We though conservatives were pro-business types."
But the right-wingers screeched "It's barbaric! It's pagan!"
After prayers to twin portraits of Jesus and Reagan
Sure, the stores put up wreaths and play just Christmas music
But exclude the word 'Christmas'and watch everyone lose it.
Belligerent, haughty, but most of all pissed
They whined of a "war" that just doesn't exist.
Now Hannity, Coulter, now Limbaugh and Gibson
On Bill O and bloggers from Reno to Lisbon!
"We will fight through the wires 'bout displays at the mall
So write really bad parodies and forward them to all!"
Oh the Christians, they shouted! Oh the rest, how they scoffed!
"Just where in the hell do these assholes get off?"
The displays in the shop are the owner's decision,
As for schools don't forget there is no state religion
So you celebrate Christmas, and I might do the same
We will try to enjoy it, even though you're a pain
But you know what I'll say if you won't take my hints:
"SHUT THE FUCK UP, YOU ZEALOTS, YOU'RE WORSE THAN THE GRINCH!"
I like the parody, because these lines in the original are just ridiculous:
Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.
Franken is Jewish, as these types (usually) well know. Neither Franken nor Fonda is African American, nor has ever written a book, AFAIK, about any holiday whatsoever.
They're just mad because Franken was a friend of Jerry Garcia! :D
I like the parody, but in real life, both sides in this argument really need to chill. I mean, if someone wished me a Happy Chanukah, I wouldn't be offended even though I'm not Jewish; I'd just take it as an offer of good wishes and leave it at that. By the same token, I see no harm in "Merry Christmas" (I'm agnostic; I celebrate Christmas but in a secular way -- gifts and lights and a tree but no church or prayers). But waaaay back when I worked in retail (high school and college), I would wish customers "happy holidays" -- it just seemed more appropriate. (The store management had no policy on the subject; cashiers could say whatever they wanted.)
I mean, really, don't people have anything better to do than get bent-out-of-shape about something a minimum-wage worker says to them at the close of a transaction?
I would just like to observe that, strictly speaking, it's not correct to wish anyone a Merry Christmas until the night of Dec. 24. Until then it is not Christmas, it is Advent: a time to prepare for the holiday, not the holiday itself.
Generally when people say "Merry Christmas" during the advent its a well-wishing to people they probably will not see before Christmas eve/day. I'm not leaving my job wishing everyone a merry christmas 5 days a week or hanging up the phone with my best friend saying "Merry christmas".
Yes. But if, say, a customer started yelling at you for saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas", "It won't be Christmas for another two weeks" would to my mind be a perfectly legitimate response.
