In honor of this fine day, I'm gonna tell y'all a story....

I was almost born in my parent's car forty three years ago today. Mom woke up that morning just after 6:00 AM with what she thought was false labor pains. Her due date was about 2 weeks away, so she wasn't concerned. My brother, her first child, was 2 weeks late. Hell, she didn't even have her bag packed yet! Then her water broke about 20 minutes later...

She freaked out, of course. She woke dad up and tried to get dressed between contractions, which were about three minutes apart and quite strong. Dad, in turn, threw some clothes on and woke up my three year old brother and helped him get dressed. They dropped my brother off at my aunt Sharon's house, which was about a half a block away. When they got there, Aunt Sharon came running out of the house to get my brother out of the car, pulling her pants on as she did so... I guess it was quite a picture...

Then it was off to the hospital, which was on the other side of town--about a half an hour away...

Dad drove like a bat out of hell, doing almost 70 as they raced to get to the hospital. When they were almost there...WHOOOWHOOWOOWOOO!!! They got pulled over by a cop, who was quite curious as to the reason why the blond man with the crew cut was driving his teal green sedan so damned fast down Sheridan road at 7:00 AM. Cop didn't take long to figure out why. Being a ROOKIE COP, he FREAKED!!! Then, after taking a second to collect himself, he escorted them to the hospital, lights and siren blaring.

They get to the emergency room in one piece just before shifts were due to change. Third shift staff dragged their feet, not wanting to get stuck staying around. First shift stalled because they didn't want to start early. Somebody must've done something, because mom did make it into a delivery room in time. Back then, women got shaved before delivery for "sanitary reasons". The nurses managed to get mom half shaved before I came screaming into this world at 7:10 AM on Thursday, June 19, 1969. The doctor showed up five minutes later...;)

How's that for a story?
