It's been a week, let me tell you!

Here's what happened to us:

We didn't flood in the days long deluge, but we did sustain storm damage.

There was a storm Wednesday night around 2000 hours when we were leaving the bowling alley from my league night. Not a bad storm, it seemed, but it did end up biting us in the ass really hard...

I'd noticed the storm had picked up a bit when I was on my way to Walgreens, but still nothing extraordinary. As I got home, I thought the storm was actually winding down a bit, about to peter out. That lasted about ten minutes. About ten minutes after I got in the door there was a bright flash and a terrific boom. Lightning struck nearby! :( At the same time as this happened there was a "pop" and the light smell of electronics frying smoke in the office where J was on his computer, which promptly shut off.

Total tally: lost the Juniper SRX firewall, the Juniper switch, most of the innards of J's PC and the network card on my PC. That's a lot of $$$ in gear, all tolled. All of which was plugged into surge protectors or surge protecting UPSs, mind. Something Bad happened--J's still trying to figure that out as I type. Thank Gods for Homeowner's insurance, which J will likely employ for most of his gear. I still can't believe my PC came out relatively unscathed, all things considered, especially since it was plugged into the same surge protector gear that everything that got totally fried was on...

Interestingly enough, nothing else in our house was fried. Cable modem for internet--fine (and it was plugged into the same surge protection equipment the rest of the office was). The microwave, fridge, stove--none on surge protectors, all are fine. The main TV and rest of the home entertainment system in the den, which was all on a surge protector--unscathed. Assorted small electronics like my clock radio--good to go. That's why J wants to figure out what went wrong to prevent it from happening again. He's got a couple of theories, but still needs to hash them all out and that could take some time.

J dug out his old firewall box and got us back online save for the Ooma internet phone system and his work desk VOIP phone. Replaced most of the innards on his PC yesterday with a trip to Tiger Direct--motherboard, CPU, power supply, RAM...fortunately it appears his hard drives are a bit scrambled but alright. He had to reinstall Windows 7 to get his machine to boot properly, so he's been reinstalling programs and such for hours both yesterday and today. Poor guy--he really hates building, or rebuilding (as the case is here) PCs so it's been a bit of a frustrating and very time consuming road for him but he's slowly getting his PC back to where it was.

Fucking spring storms with their Surprise Flash Bang Endings!! :/
