Dunno if you remember - I used to have a Himilayan, Peaches, who had a very dense, very long, very poofy coat. She looked lovely with her coat all in...except she refused to groom. Even better, she refused to let anyone else groom her. Peaches was - and remains - the first cat I have ever had who could virtually turn herself inside out even with three people holding her down, slide to the floor, and sit there looking like a knotted dried-out shipwreck victim.
So I used to have her shaved. Three times a month. And she loved it. She looked like a peeled peach, but the shorter the better; the less hair she had, the happier she was.
On the other hand, Momotaro, my inebriate, loved to be groomed, and would like on his back on my legs to remind me to do so, several times a day. (Of course then he'd roll over and stick his nose into my brandy snifter, which was why I had to replace all my good liquour glasses with Mason jars, but...)
Good ol' Lars. If he's getting all knotted, I bet he'll be happy to have the fuzz gone. And I can't wait for the peeled pictures!
