Because of Diva's chronic constipation issues, I keep close track of when both Jazz and Diva go number two. Diva because if she doesn't go often enough there could be problems, like megacolon, for instance. Jazz? Well, if I'm already watching for one I guess I might as well watch for the other? It's just a habit thing, really, I guess...
Anyway, I realized yesterday morning when I shoveled the boxes that Jazz had not left me a deposit in awhile and her eating habits had slowly but steadily waned a little bit. Checked her notebook--nope, nothing since the 2nd and it was listed as "small". Hmm...Could she be blocked up?
Called the vet, spoke to a tech. It's been three days, and three days is the magic number for Diva to bring her in for a looksee. Is she acting funny? A little off...Is she bloated? Not really, oh wait, she looks a little fuller in the tummy area? Well, hell. Don't want to bring her in unless it's absolutely necessary...Let me discuss it with the boyfriend and feed her her breakfast.
Feed her, she doesn't eat that much. Talk to J--he leaves it up to me. Call vet back--we're bringing her in...
Speed to the vet because it's closing in on an hour left that they're open and if Jazz needs an enema they want at least an hour for them to do their thing and her to do her thing and it takes us 15-20 minutes to get to the vet in good traffic. Get there with an hour and ten to spare til close. Dr. B. gives her a good going over. Full bladder (shocker there /sarcasm), but her tummy/bowels area felt soft and little to nothing in there that he could tell. "You know, as cats get older their systems slow down. It's not unusual for them to go longer between movements." But Dr. B., you tell me not to wait more than three days and it's been just over three days. "No, no, she's what? 17? They can go longer at that age. With your other cat, who's younger and has problems, that's different altogether. I can give her more enulose if you like." Yes, I would like--she hates the stuff and she can be hating on you for giving it to her rather than us for giving it to her...
Le sigh. All that stress, the jaunty drive to get there, all for basically nothing amiss. Poor Jazz, poked and prodded and given more Enulose. About two hours after we got home she downloaded a deposit, albeit a small one. At least Dr. B. didn't charge us for the trouble. I think he felt bad for all three of us. :/
Ah, the joys of an elderly cat...
And I'm still the "Mayor" of Aurora Cat Clinic on FourSquare. ;)
